8 Dec

2012 was a good year for music. Tons of good music was put out. A proper list should be the 500 or 1,000 best songs of 2012! Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of time. Great early 80’s guitar vibe going on this one.

24. OFF!- King Kong Brigade

Keith Morris is the real deal and this punk super group is the real deal.

23. Glenn Campbell- A Better Place

The master songwriter ends his career on a high note.

22. Bobby Womack- Stupid

Comeback of the year.

21. Frank Ocean- Pyramids

This nine minute epic song is brilliant. Ocean is taking R&B forward.

20. Gotye- Somebody That I Used To Know

You couldn’t escape this tune if you tried to this year. Good thing it’s a good one even if it has no chorus.

19. Metric- Speed the Collapse

Metric really picked up steam this year. The album Synthetica was outstanding and their live show really kicks.

18. Lightouts- The Big Picture

Good stuff from this young  up and coming band.

17. Wild Flag- Electric Band

Mary Timony channels the spirit of Television while the all girl band lays it down. Brilliant stuff.

16. Leonard Cohen- Show Me The Place

Mr. Cohen will always be awesome.

15. Childish Gambino- Heartbeat

Donald Glover was on a real hot streak this past year. Community was one of televisions best shows. The talent on the mic was impressive and he slayed live all year long, even with a broken foot!

14. Ceremony- Adult

Burning rocker from this California punk band . Being an adult sometimes sucks because we give up the things we love sometimes.

13. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds- Everybody’s On The Run

Gallagher’s debut album with his new band the High Flying Birds is pretty good as this song would indicate.

12. The Hives- Wait A Minute

The Hives ruled everything this year. the album is all killer. Their live show can’t be beat. If you not a fan, you should be.

11. The Jealous Sound- Your Eyes Were Shining

10. Neil Young & Crazy Horse- Ramada Inn

Sixteen glorious and ragged minutes long. Young sounds refreshed and ready to take everything on. Crazy Horse is still the best ever.

9. Fun.- Some Nights

Catchy with gigantic choruses. This song was everywhere this year including my earbuds constantly.

8. The Weeknd- Wicked Games

Not a cover of the Chris Isaak song, but a foul mouthed plea to the other woman. Abel Tesfaye has been a bad,bad man in this dark ominous and brooding R&B stunner. Another artist pushing R&B and music in general forward to better places.

7. Line & Circle- Roman Ruins

Gorgeous jangly guitar epic from young band out of L.A. Hearing a lot of the mid 80’s Paisley Underground in this and that’s a good thing.

6. The Lumineers- Ho Hey

As Americana music is hot right now this young trio has out Mumfored Mumford and Sons and out Avetted The Avett Brothers with this sweet homily to a fine young lady.

5. Free Energy- Dance All Night

Gentle and breezy with killer melodies and hooks all over the place. “I can’t sleep, I got a different crush every week” is the line of the year.

4. Wildlife Control- Analog Or Digital

Fantastic driving beat and harmonies deliver a knock out punch of a song.

3. Moonface- Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips

“Teary Eyes and bloody Lips make you look like Stevie Nicks” was another stunning line delivered this year. Not sure how the real Ms. Nicks would take to that visual but it works wonders in this gloomy somewhat gothy an moody single.

2. The Jezabels- Endless Summer

My favorite find of the year was this Australian band. this song was one of the reason’s why. The other would be their fantastic album Prisoner.

1. Japandroids- Continuous Thunder

Japandroids were the kings of 2012 killing it with this amazing number and an entire album’s worth of quality rock n’ roll. “If I had all the answers and you had the body you wanted would we love with a legendary fire?” is the quarry of the year. Celebration Rock indeed.
